It turns out that cowardice and cynicism knows no bounds in Washington today. When I was young, I was told that I should stand up for my beliefs. When I was young, I was told by Gerald Ford that he was pardoning Nixon to heal the political body of our nation. When I was young...but when I was older, after Gerald Ford dies, I am hearing a different story...a story of cronyism.
Let me get this straight--Gerald Ford opposed the current US Administration's policy in Iraq in 2004...but didn't want to mention it til after he was dead? Yeah, great. Thanks, Gerald, for all your patriotism there. Why didn't you want to say anything? Because you didn't want to offend your old friends, your former staffers in your White House? I mean, what kind of dirt did they have on you that you couldn't say anything when you were alive?
But, the final straw, yeah, the final straw is hearing that the real reason you pardoned Richard Nixon was not to heal the country its political wounds but because Nixon was your "friend". That about does it for me. He picked you to be his Vice President because you would help him preside over vice without having to go to jail. It is that simple.
Given that you are obviously a better politician and a better friend and a better spokesperson for our country than any of the current bevvy of goons you left us to ruin our country, it makes me shudder. And, frankly, I am glad that you are no longer around to help your former White House staffers out any further. I just hope that the current politicians in Washington will have enough sense to clean the whole lot of you and your ilk out of Washington...like would have been done the first time if you hadn't pardon Nixon "for the good of the nation".
In fact, you make me want to change my Constitution to eliminate the Presidential pardon power for ten years after a political offense is committed by a nationally elected official who is impeached. I think that might go some way to end your kind of "friendship" in the most powerful political office in the world. I hope to see this in my lifetime. I also hope I live a long sweet time to see people who are as cynical as you are and as cynical as the current gang in our White House something that will be a thing that people read about in horror, instead of watch live on TV everyday.
